Can you share with us your fondest childhood memories of Christmas?
JV:
I have many, many fond memories of Christmas as a child. I was blessed to be born and raised in a Christian home where Jesus was the center of our family and celebrating his birth was the priority around the holidays. I can distinctly remember the feeling of excitement and awe walking into our candlelit Christmas Eve service at Calvary Community Church. As we quietly left the sanctuary at the services’ end to fellowship with our church family over coffee and snacks it was hard as a little girl to contain my excitement. On the wayhome my dad, mom, sister and I would sing Christmas songs and bask in the glory of our great King. We would then go home to find a pair of brand new, what we called “Christmas Jammies” waiting for us. My mom got us a new pair every year and still continues the tradition to this day.

What Christmas traditions get your family pumped around the holidays?
JV:
The one tradition that everyone in our household looks forward to is the day we get our tree. We go to the tree farm together as a family and immediately go home to decorate it. Now if you’re a parent, you’ll know the struggles of decorating a tree with children. Our tree usually ends up lopsided with ornaments with absolutely no rhyme or reason to the way the ornaments are organized on the tree. However, it is the joy, smiles and laughter that matter the most during those moments. Besides, I may, or may not, rearrange the ornaments after the kids are sound asleep!

What is the greatest part of your job at BCS?
JV:
Being called to teach has been one of life’s greatest blessings. Being a part of the BCS family has been truly amazing. I can honestly say I am inspired, lifted up, and encouraged each day as I step foot into the school building. It is amazing to see God’s handiwork throughout the classroom, but best of all, to rejoice alongside students, parents and colleagues as they accomplish the spiritual, academic, social, and emotional aspects of life.
